Kerala Kalamandalam was founded in the year 1930 by poet Vallathol Narayana Menon and Manakkulam Mukunda Raja. Kalamandalam follows the gurukula sampradayam, the ancient Indian education system based on residential tutelage. It is a major centre for learning Indian performing arts, especially those that have origin in the southern state of India, especially Kerala.
The Kalamandalam was accorded the status of 'Deemed University for Art and Culture' in the year 2006, by the Government of India. The University Grants Commission granted an A category status for Kalamandalam Deemed University of Art and Culture, in the year 2010. Also, it is the only deemed university in Kerala state to be accorded with that prestigious status.
